  • Peter Paul Galligan

    Peter Paul Galligan was reared in the townland of Drumnalaragh .

    He was educated in Aghaconny national school and St Patrick’s college Cavan. He joined the Irish Republican Brotherhood and in 1915 linked up with Thomas McDonagh who was director of training for the Irish Volunteers.

    He fought in the GPO on Easter Monday and Padraig Pearse sent him to Wexford on the Tuesday evening to mobilize troops there and he was appointed officer in charge. After surrender on the following Sunday, Galligan was arrested , court martialed and sentenced to death.

    His sentence was commuted to life imprisonment and he was jailed in England. He was released in 1917 and was given the task of organising the IRA in Cavan and Leitrim.

    He was arrested by the British military and interred in Reading gaol for his activities. While in gaol he was elected MP for West Cavan. He was released in 1919 and again started to organise armed resistance in Cavan. He was again arrested and jailed in Belfast. He was freed in time for the truce in July 1921.He voted in favour of the Treaty and resigned his Dail seat in January 1922.

    He took no part in the Civil war and from then onwards concentrated on business. He founded Galligans Ltd in Henry St and was a director of the Irish Press newspaper. He died on 15 December 1966 aged 77 years and is buried in Deans Grange cemetery, Dublin.
